The facility reopens again after flooding last month.
Abbott, Inc. announced this week that its infant formula plant in Sturgis, Michigan, has resumed production. After a four-month shutdown due to contamination concerns, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had approved the reopening of the Abbott facility. However, heavy flooding nine days after it had reopened in early June caused the company to close the plant again.
President Biden’s administration has been utilizing the Defense Production Act to speed up production and has arranged for formula to be imported from other nations.
Abbott has not released a timeline regarding how long it will take to produce and distribute its most popular formula. “We are working to restart Similac production as soon as we can. We’ll provide more information when we have it,” said Abbott spokesman John Koval.
